Summary of "Vernon God Little"
Vernon is at the police station. His best friend Jesus has shot and killed most of their classmates. Vernon is being blamed for it because Jesus was his best friend and because of a few other circumstances. Jesus committed suicide right after the deed and the only witness - their teacher Mr Nuckles - is in shock and incapable of talking. Vernon is convinced that the truth will prevail once everything settles down. His family's house is surrounded by media. One reporter in particular is extra eager and manages to infiltrate the family. This reporter, Lally, is willing to do anything to get his story. Vernon discovers that Lally is not a real reporter but a TV repairman, a man with debts and desperate to sell this story to CNN. Vernon tries to leave the country via Houston where he meets up with the girl of his dreams - Taylor Figueroa - on his way down to Mexico. This novel is a parody dealing with subjects like the US judicial system, capital punishment and media. Circumstances make the innocent Vernon look very guilty, and the media plays a great part of it. One reporter in particular needs a good story and people want a scapegoat. This is an exaggerated and a bit crazy story taking place in Martirio, Texas. The story is told by Vernon who is 15 years old and he uses lots of foul language and slang, not only in the dialogue but all through the book. It is a happy ending but I think it was a bit too simple. This novel is okay but nothing more than that.
