Summary of "Your Miracle Brain"
How do you keep your brain young, healthy, increase your IQ and use your brain's full potential? In this book Jean Harper writes about the latest brain research. Eating the right type of food and supplements can slow down the aging process and fight off mental diseases like alzheimer, parkinson and ALS. Recent research has shown that the brain is not static, but constantly changing and repairing itself. It can even create new brain cells. The brain's functions are however dependent on what you eat and how you treat it. The wrong type of food and stress can damage the brain. The brain's worst enemy are the free radicals that attack the brain cells and damage them until they finally die. These attacks of free radicals damage the brain and causes it to age. You can slow down this aging process, as Harper writes, by eating food that contains antioxidants and Omega-3 fish oil. Harper furthermore writes that there is reason to believe that the so called paleo diet that our forefathers ate during evolution is what our brains are made for. This is food like fruits, vegetables, nuts and fish which contains lots of antioxidants and Omega-3 fish oil. Harper also advocates eating supplements like vitamines, minerals, Ginkgo biloba, Coenzyme Q-10 and Choline, which have all shown good effects on the brain. This is a very interesting book to read. Even though it consists of scientific research the information is presented in a way that makes it easy to read and understand. The reference list at the the end of the book is very long, and can be a good resource for further information on the subject.
