Citizen Kane

As mentioned in the previous essay, this film was told through a series of flashbacks, from several different points of view. Not only from the many different camera angles, but from the different people Kane had acquainted himself with throughout his life. Kane is portrayed by Orsen Welles as a mysterious person but at the same time a troubled, unsatisfied man. Rosebud was Kane’s last dying words. As reporter Jerry Thompson embarks on his journey to find the meaning of a man;s last, dying words, it is known right from the start that it is not going to be an easy task.
Thompsonfirst visit;s a nightclub to discuss the word with Kane;s second wife, Susan Alexander. She will barely lift her drunken head to even acknowledge his presence. Not to be discouraged, Thompson quickly moves on to his second source of information, Thatcher;s Estates and Holdings. Thompson is allowed to view Thatcher;s financial memoirs in manuscript. As Thompson begins reading, we see Kane as a young boy and learn the circumstances of his situation.Through his mother, the boy has just inherited a great fortune.Mrs. Kane the sole owner of one of the world’s great silver mines, then makes her son the ward of the bank that administers her estate, and Thatcher, whom the angry young Kane bashes with a sled, then takes the boy East to be raised.Now grown up and mature Kane decides to take direct control of a small, struggling newspaper, and immediately begins using it to attack Thatcher and others among America’s financial elite. This displays the mystery with Kane as he wants to expand on something small into something big, but we don’t know what.
