It's been said that Citizen Kane is the best film ever made.Though, without
knowing much about filmmaking and different techniques, one can never get the full value
of it.Understanding the setting, light use, depth of frame, and basic composition make
Citizen Kane all the more better and great of a film.It is essential to take notice of these
When deciding which of the four parts of the film to analyze, I came to the
conclusion that the lighting and shadows are one of the most interesting and important
factors in the film, not only because the film is in black and white but also because it
contributed significantly to the description during the film.Perhaps more than the other
The film itself was very clean and smoothly edited.Both high key and low key
lighting techniques were used throughout the film, I believe to show the different feeling
of each scene.I found there to be times when there was a significant use of the different
fill lights used to emphasize close up shots of the character's faces.There are three
different things I decided to keep my eye on during the second viewing of Citizen Kane;
lighting, use of shadows, and use of lighting and shadows together to form and intrinsic
interest or just to contrast each other.
Bright lighting was used quite a bit throughout the film.Mostly during times of
struggle, upset, or a big change of events.Scenes such as the thematic montage between
Suzan's operatic appearance and the different newspapers, this was a big time in the life of
Suzan and Charles Kane.Another example is the when Kane lost the campaign.His
office at the newspaper was very bright though no one was there celebrating.Upset was
also showed during the fight that Charles and Suzan got into when she told him she didn't
want to sing anymore.The room they were in was very bright and well lit.At the end,
