In his literary work, Daisy Miller, Henery James uses different characters to exemplify certain belief and to contribute the symbolic pattern of the story, Daisy Miler.
James uses the two characters of Daisy Miller and Mrs. Castello to exemplify the different between America and Europe. in order to address his stance on the conflict between two cultures.
Daisy Miller is a young lady from America where her father is a wealthy businessman. She has traveled to Europe with her mother and brother. She has got a great advantage of social scene a broad. She is stubborn as mule. She always insists on doing what ever she wants to do and completely defiant other European's customs imposes. She wonders daily around the city and has a great number of friends She makes an extensive relationship with many gentlemen and she doesn't care about the criticisms of Europeans' traditions and customs. She also has a spontaneous character. When Mr. Winterbourn invites her to go
with him to visit the château, she immediately agrees with no blush on her face. When
she goes to Italy , she meets Mr. Giovanell who is a poor man. She feels happy and excited
to join him and takes a trip with him. Daisy invites him to with her to Mrs. Walker's party.
She is eagerly accepts Mr. Giovanell's invitation to the coliseum. Moreover, she represents the American's flirt. She says to Mr. Winterbourn when he decides to go to Italy " I don't
Want you to come for your aunt, I want you to come fore me:" also when she tells him
" I didn't enjoy walking with it I preferred walking with you". She relishes in rambling outside with her unlimited numbers of gentlemen friends. Once she decides to go out at eleven o'clock, her courier declares his refusal to her manner.
Hennery James uses Daisy's name also to contribute to the symbolic pattern of the work,
