Pride and Prejudice

I think that society in Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice is portrayed as conservative. I believe that the author personally thinks that society should both change as well as stay the same. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is told through the third person omniscient point of view.Although that is the case, I see the story through Elizabeth's point of view. Jane Austen made Elizabeth the central character who, in my opinion, felt both ways about society.
A woman is expected to behave in certain ways. Elizabeth, however, doesn't conform to the norms.Elizabeth is radical in a few ways. She turns Mr. Collins' proposal of marriage down at a time when the only thing that women were supposed to do was marry "up" or just get married at all. Also, the marriage to Mr. Collins would have saved her family from losing their home and such after Mr. Bennet passed away. She spoke to Lady Catherine the way she wanted to and didn't just smile and nod. She didn't speak to her with respect like everyone else would – she was herself. She also turned down Mr. Darcy'sfirst proposal. She walked by herself to see her sick sister at Netherfield when women weren't supposed to walk by themselves. Miss Bingley was shocked that Elizabeth appeared after walking by herself as well as the fact that she showed up all muddy. I believe Jane Austen was making fun of snobs in portraying Miss Bingley's character. Through the marriages of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth and even Jane and Mr. Bingley, the author shows the importance of love and happiness and shows that marriages based on wealth and other vain things are fruitless. I think she makes fun of the ignorance of people in society at that time. Austen shows this through Mrs. Bennet and the younger Bennet daughters.Mrs. Bennet is shown as an idiot obsessed with getting her daughters married and the younger sisters are shown as lacking common…
