Setting the Mood: Scenery in the Quiet Man and December Brid

Scenery in The Quiet Man and December Bride
In Irish films such as The Quiet Man and December Bride, aspects of nature such as scenery and weather implicate the overall moods of the film and personality of the characters.Scenery also depicts Ireland itself in two different ways, since both filmmakers are using an abundance of landscapes, but are representing Ireland's unique environment way..The Quiet Man, directed by John Ford an American filmmaker, shows Ireland as a tourist attraction and paradise getaway, whereas in December Bride, directed by Thaddeus O'Sullivan, scenery is not quite so rich and green. Both filmmakers used vast landscape in their films, but scenes in The Quiet Man represents Ireland in a cartoonist and unrealistic way that makes the film sort of silly. In December Bride, O'Sullivan uses a certain grayish tone to the scenery making Ireland look sort of stark and not so humble, giving the viewer a different feeling when looking at the landscapes and scenery. This feeling in December Bride is different from the cheerful mood of The Quiet Man.It is almost depressing because of the atmosphere.

With its vividly green scenery, tumbling hills, stone cottages, and bright blue sky, Ford is showing that Ireland is a place that American's should go in order to elude their problems. This Ireland is one that attracts the American eye because it's scenery and landscape is overpowering but luring at the same time…
