Blanche and Stanley are two totally different people.Blanche lives in a world of fantasy where she lives for how things ought to be, not for how they are.She worked as a school teacher and told Stella she was on leave of absence because of her nerves but actually she had an affair with a teenage student.Stanley on the other hand is a – no nonsense, cut to the chase kind of guy.He has no patience for chit chat and social compliments.Blanch comes from an old southern family from Laurel, Mississippi and was raised to see herself as socially elite. Stanley comes from an immigrant family of polish decent and is a proud member of the working class.He works as an auto parts supply man. Stanley has a bad drinking problem and cannot find control while angered and drunk.This has lead to many different disputes within the house.He gets mad and throws the radio out of the window and beats up on his wife Stella while she is pregnant with his son. On page 83 Blanche says, "He acts like an animal, has an animal's habits! Eats like one, moves like one, talks like one!There's even something-sub-human-something not quite to the stage of humanity yet.Yes, something-ape-like about him, like one of those pictures I've seen in-anthropological studies!
