The Grapes of Wrath

The novel, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck opens up showing the dust of the tractors blinding the men, women, and children.The dust was hitting their senses so that they had to cover themselves with their own shirts.In the beginning of the book Pa Joad is presented as having some intestinal fortitude, by showing his anger towards the man in the tractor.He is looked at being the man of the house.Although, throughout the book we realize that he is not solely the leader and that they tend to rely on each other’s strengths. In the beginning of this novel it is important to believe that the man is the leader.The women realize that they need to let the men have this perception of themselves or they would die little by little inside themselves.
Complications develop when the family starts their journey to California.The Joads drive away from their homes with a great sense of loss and try to hold onto their memories of the past.
The Joads drives throughout the day and Grandma has to go to pee.They stop at thefirst bush they come upon.William complains of thirst. The Joads then realize that they forgot the water barrel at their previous home.But they need to move on and stop at the next gas station where there was a water pump.The man at the service station is cautious of their appearance of worth and questions their ability to pay for the services he rendered.Tom is sure to tell him that they do have the money to pay for gas.The service man wonders what the world is coming to when a man gets pushed out of his home and has to move and become wonderers.
While the men were gassing the truck up and the children were getting their share of water, the dog ran out into the street and gets ran over. William and Ruthie saw the dog get hit and this was therefirst experience of death.6
