The Great Gatsby- Costumes in 20th Century

The 20th century was full of change, travel, and excitement. It was era of sudden new changes in the dressing styles of Americans. People had no worries and problems. Hence, they started thinking about their look, dressing style, and personality. The luxurious department stores of the time attracted a daily gathering of elegant women eager to display their wealth through the latest fashions (Miller 60).
As the 20th century opened, fashion continued to flirt with style. Women started wearing skirts and hats. For thefirst time, toddler age boys could wear trousers instead of dresses. Although World War I (1914- 1918) and its aftermath brought disillusionment and unrest. The younger generation was determined to start "a fresh world." Work, sports, dancing, the automobiles, and the American movies all left their mark on fashion. The 1920's and 1930's will be best remembered as the era of Gabriella (Coco) Chanel, a French designer, whose simpler lines led to the flat-chested look of 1920's, and Elsa Schiaparelli , credited with the sinuous line and padded shoulders of the 1930 (Rowland and Warne 52).
In the 1920's, the three piece suit was considered sports wear and would never have to been worn in town (Rowland and Warne 53). Whereas, the wide legged baggy trousers that originated in 1925 among oxford undergraduates in England became fashionable and became known as "oxford bags." Although the fashion lasted only a short time, it has been revived in other guises over the decades. In a nutshell, men's clothing was aimed at comfort after the war. Dress shirts softened. Shoes that tied replaced shoes that buttoned (Miller 65).
In 1920, after the decades of lost battles, American women won the right to vote through the 19th amendment of the United States Constitution. Women's freedom at the ballot box soon mirrored a new freedom in clothing. F
