a. In thefirst scene Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are in their home office in London. Watson and Holmes examine a mysterious cane left in the office by an unknown visitor. In this case, Watson and Holmes rely on inductive reasoning as they both offer their different theories as to the origin of the walking stick.
b. In this scene, Mortimer and Sir Henry arrive at Holmes’s place and Sir Henry has a minor mystery for Holmes. He has received a letter, posted the evening before and obviously written by a common person. Here Sherlock Homes uses his skills of inductive reasoning in order to discover the unknown sender of this mysterious letter.
c. Later on in the movie, Watson follows the boy over the hill and reaches a stone hut. This hut is empty but there are signs the stranger lived there, however there are no other clues in the hut. Watson wonders whether the stranger is their enemy or their friend and stays back to find out. Next morning, he hears the man’s boots and a familiar voice which called his name. This stranger is Sherlock Holmes. But how did Holmes know that it's Watson inside the hut. He basically used his inductive reasoning and the cigarette as an evidence to reach his conclusion.
d. Holmes also uses his inductive reasoning to observe the portrait of Hugo Baskerville and noticing that Hugo looks like Stapleton.
