To Kill a Mockingbird

All writers have some sort of theme in their work that the reader is suppose to pick up if they fully understand the story. In the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, she tells the reader about a girl's experience of life and her experiences with society. The little girl being the narrator, Jean Louis Finch or Scout being her nickname, is telling how she grew and how prejudice has affected the town she lives in. Her father, Atticus, was her good role model and was her source of knowledge and good morals. But when Atticus had to defend a Negro in court, the town of Maycomb goes crazy and won't accept him doing so. Harper Lee has thoroughly shown prejudge acts and how ignorant they can be. Harper Lee has strong thoughts on racism and how the segregation laws were no good at all, privacy and how people should be left alone if no one is bothering them, and how it is best to have self control. It is the themes and how they are written to be taught to the reader also are what make a book so strongly influential.
This story takes place back when there were segregation laws and segregation had only arisen because of racism. Racism is to immediately assume bad thoughts about a person or group without finding out who or what they really are. One big issue concerning racism was the case that Atticus had with Tom Robinson, a Negro accused of rape, and Mayella Ewell, the nineteen year-old that was said to be raped. Even after all evidence was led to Tom Robinson not raping her, they still found him guilty because they'd rather take a White person's word over a Negro's. Scout never had problems with racism since her nanny was a Negro and that the majority of them were nice to her and Jem. Atticus had taught Scout and Jem that Blacks and Whites were just as human as everyone else was in the world, and that both ethnics should be treated the same.
