To Kill a Mockingbird

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem is the sister of Jean Louise Finch. In the book, Jem’s Father, Atticus, is a lawyer defending a black man named Tom Robinson. The entire town thinks that Atticus is crazy for defending Tom. Tom is being accused of raping and beating a white girl named Mayella Violet Ewell.
Jem is extremely proud of Atticus for a multitude of reasons. The main reason Jem is proud of Atticus is because he is defending Tom Robinson, not for money, but because it is just the right thing to do. Another reason Jem is proud of Atticus is because Atticus believes that Black and White people are all equal and just because the rest of the town thinks Black people are “basically immoral beings” is no reason for him to think that. The final reason Jem is proud of Atticus is because Atticus doesn’t listen to the rumors about Boo Radley and tells the kids not to make fun of Boo Radley.Jem demonstrates his pride by standing up for Atticus in front of at least ten other white men in front of the jail.
This pride is important in this novel because if Jem and Scout didn’t have this pride in Atticus, they would have grown up into adults exactly like the rest of the town. If it was not for this few people who believed that racism was bad, people in modern day would still be the racist people they were in the novel.
